  • I have signed the petition to immediately stop all lockdown measures in Alberta. I have added my signature for the following reasons:

    1. For the working population Covid is less lethal than the seasonal flu. Data from Health Canada and Statistics Canada shows that in the under 60 population, Covid deaths are lower than those from seasonal flu over the past 20 years. Dr. Roger Hodkinson, a very qualified virologist, stated clearly in a recent presentation to Edmonton City Council that "for Canadians under 65 the odds of dying from Covid are less than 1 in 300,000". Even in the over 60 population deaths are not out of scale with the seasonal flu.

    2. The original reason for instituting lockdowns is invalid. The lockdowns were instituted to 'flatten the curve' and prevent our health care system from being overwhelmed. The open letter from Dr. Dennis Modry addressed this issue very clearly. However, the policy of sending health care workers who are not sick home to self-isolate for 14 days simply because they came in contact with an infected person is creating a potential crisis in our health care system. We have a surplus of beds. We have a limited supply of doctors and nurses.

    3. Masks and social distancing don't work. If these measures worked, there would have been a marked drop in cases and deaths in Calgary and Edmonton when mandatory mask bylaws and social distancing policies were put in place. No such drop was observed. See our site for a chart from Health Canada for the proof.

    4. Lockdowns don't work. World Health Organization representative Dr. David Nabarro has stated clearly "We really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method. Develop better systems for doing it. Work together and learn from each other, but remember lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never, ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer." With Alberta businesses being severely restricted in the number of customers they can serve, the only thing being accomplished is further damage to the Alberta economy, and to the lives and livelihoods of Albertans.

    5. Lockdowns are costing far more in loss of life than the virus has or ever could. In 2020 only 66 people under the age of 60 in Alberta died from Covid. Meanwhile we have seen record numbers of suicides, drug overdoses and deaths from untreated medical conditions. Many of these suicides and overdoses are in the under 25 age group.

    6. The lockdown measures are a clear violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights. Many legal organizations are filing lawsuits against all levels of government for this blatant violation of Canadian rights and a number of cases of lockdown fines across Canada have already been thrown out of court as being unconstitutional.

    7. Much more effective and far cheaper methods exist. Research from very credible sources show that treating patients with Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine reduces deaths by 90%, while 4,000 mg/day of Vitamin D will drastically reduce infection rates.

In addition, I am opposed to the mandatory mask laws for the following reasons:

    A. Masks are completely ineffectual. See point 3 above.

    B. I believe these laws to be a violation of our rights and freedoms. The decision to wear a mask should be a personal one.

    C. I oppose the recent move to make masks mandatory for Alberta students, first, on the grounds that they are ineffectual, and second, on the grounds that not a single school-age child in Alberta has died from COVID-19. In addition, only three people under the age of 20 in all of Canada have died from Covid. This is far less than die every year in this age group from seasonal flu. Clearly our children are in no danger, and masks are disruptive in the classroom.

    D. The argument that masks are in place to protect the teachers is a hollow one. Most teachers are under the age of 60 and far more likely to die while driving to work than to die from Covid. In addition, due to isolation policies young teachers who are in zero danger from this virus and who develop so much as a sniffle are being sent home to self-isolate, being replaced by substitute teachers, many of whom are semi-retired and over 60. This policy is not making people safer, but actually putting older substitute teachers at risk.

I trust you will take these points into consideration and work to rescind all lockdowns province-wide and get Albertans back to work and a much-needed and overdue normal life.

Fallout

The Cost of the Lockdowns

Lockdowns have led to unprecedented unemployment and the permanent closing of many businesses across Alberta. In addition to this, Albertans are being forced to endure the societal toll of isolation which has dramatically increased deaths from suicides and overdoses. Many are gravely concerned that their personal and financial well-being is at higher risk from lockdowns than from the virus itself.  In the words of Dr. David Nabarro, of the World Health Organization, "the only thing the lockdowns are accomplishing is making the poor poorer."

Freedom

Violations of Our Rights

The lockdowns and mandatory mask bylaws are contraventions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and of the Bill of Rights. There are a number of organizations across Canada, as well as here in Alberta, filing suit against our governments for these violations of our rights.

Fact

Covid Science & Statistics

We now have data from our own government and health authorities to prove that COVID-19 is not a threat to the vast majority of us, especially the working population. We also have expert testimony that the lockdowns and mask bylaws are not effective at stopping the spread while there are proven treatments and preventative measures that could greatly reduce the spread and the number of deaths. We must question why these measures are not being used.

The Cost of the Lockdowns

The cost of the lockdowns goes far beyond increased debt and job losses. The societal impact is nothing less than disastrous, and the effects will last for years to come.

Impact on Albertans

fallout unemployed

Double Digit Unemployment

The lockdowns have resulted in the greatest spike in unemployment in nearly half a century. In three months, the unemployment rate more than doubled to an unprecedented 15.5%, and has still not recovered to a level seen in the past 30 years.  The societal impact of this cannot be overestimated. For many of these people it could be years before they can find gainful employment again.

Store Owner Turning Closed Sign In Shop Doorway

Staggering Number of Failed Businesses

Already, many Alberta businesses have gone under, and many more will follow if the lockdowns are not ended immediately. Hard-working people are losing the businesses they worked years to build in order to provide for themselves and their families. It will take many years to rebuild and in the meantime unemployment will remain at record levels.

fallout debt

Crushing Debt

Alberta alone will rack up a deficit of more that $24 billion in 2020, with no end it sight, writes the Calgary Herald. The figures "are incredibly sobering" and "predict a grim reality for Albertans,” said Finance Minister Travis Toews. Meanwhile, the federal government's deficit is projected to exceed $380 billion this year alone. All of this money will ultimately come out of our pockets, and those of our children. We will be paying this for decades.

fallout isolation

Isolation

The real and tragic consequences and psychological impact of isolation on humans is well documented and can lead to depression, despair, mental illness, poorer physical health, increased suicides, substance abuse, domestic violence, self-harm and child depression. Our elderly should have the right to choose to see their loved ones, and many are dying alone without the comfort of their families around them. Some would even choose death before another lockdown.

fallout suicide

Skyrocketing Suicide Rate

Despair has led a record number of Albertans to take their own lives this year. The Suicide Prevention Center tells us that for every 1% increase in unemployment, there is a 2.8% increase in the Alberta suicide rate. The largest sections of our population affected are youth and parents in their 40s and 50s. Families are losing children and parents who were in no danger from the virus whatsoever.

Young businessman is feeling unwell after doing cocaine

Increased Substance Abuse

Hopelessness, anxiety and depression lead to increased substance abuse with alcohol and drugs. We are seeing a record number of overdoses this year, both accidental and intentional. Alana Smith reports, "Overdose-related deaths are currently outpacing COVID-19 fatalities in Alberta." The societal and financial cost of these out-of-control addictions will impact the victims and their loved ones for years to come.

fallout abuse

Domestic and Child Abuse

Financial pressures, anxiety, fear, substance abuse and isolation all contribute to rising domestic and child abuse. Statistics clearly show that our children are in no danger from this virus, but they are perhaps the one group suffering the most. Where does a child kept home from school and not allowed to see their friends go when their own parents turn on them?

fallout education

Impact on Our Children

Studies show that children are impacted academically, mentally and socially in isolation. “The risks posed by the COVID-19 crisis to children are enormous,” said Jo Becker, children’s rights advocacy director at Human Rights Watch. They are cut off from their peers except for social media, highly susceptible to verbal abuses, angry outbursts, and rejection, with cyber-bullying on the rise. What of our children, and the future we promised them?

Why We Protest the lockdown measures

  • 1

For the working population, COVID-19 is less lethal than seasonal flu.

Data from Health Canada and Statistics Canada shows that in the under 60 population, COVID-19 mortality is lower than from seasonal flu over the past 20 years. Even in the over 60 population, mortality is in scale with the seasonal flu. See the charts above for evidence.

  • 2

Lockdowns did not improve access to health care for Albertans.

The lockdowns were instituted to 'flatten the curve' and prevent our health care system from being overwhelmed. Data now shows that at no point in the past year have Covid cases exceeded 12% of Alberta's ICU capacity. At no point was there danger of our hospitals being overwhelmed. However, many elective surgeries and treatments were cancelled or rescheduled and wait times are long.

  • 4

    Lockdowns don't work.

World Health Organization representative Dr. David Nabarro has stated clearly "We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus," and also that "the only thing the lockdowns are accomplishing is to make the poor poorer". With Albertan businesses still being severely restricted in the number of customers they can serve, the only thing being accomplished is further damage to the Albertan economy.

  • 5

Lockdowns are costing far more in loss of life than the virus has or ever could.

To date, less than 25 people under the age of 60 in Alberta have died with Covid. Historical data from the Center for Suicide Prevention predicts that this year alone, we will see an additional 120 suicides in the under 60 population as a result of increased unemployment alone, to say nothing of the isolation and anxiety being caused by lockdown measures and media fearmongering. Many of these suicides will be in their teens and twenties. In Alberta, the suicide rate increases by 2.8% for every 1% increase in unemployment. This equates to an additional 17 suicides for every 100,000 jobs lost. This will continue in to the coming years, as it will take a very long time to replace those jobs.

  • 6

The lockdown measures are a clear violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Many legal organizations are filing lawsuits against all levels of government for this blatant violation of Canadian rights and a number of cases of lockdown fines across Canada have already been thrown out of court as being unconstitutional.

Why We Protest the Mandatory Mask Bylaw

  • A

    Masks don't work.

If these measures worked, there would have been a marked drop in cases and deaths in Calgary and Edmonton when mandatory mask bylaws and social distancing policies were put in place. No such drop was observed. Studies now show in countries when mandatory masking was introduced, there was no positive benefit to slowing the spread of the virus.

  • B

Mandatory masks are a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

We believe these laws to be a violation of our rights and freedoms. The decision to wear a mask should be a personal one, especially in light of the now overwhelming evidence that only about 1 in 10,000 Albertans are in any danger from this virus and the fact that no correlating drop in cases has been observed following the institution of mandatory masks. These mask bylaws serve nothing but to increase needless fear.

  • C

Masks are disruptive and unnecessary in schools

We oppose mandatory masks for Calgary students, first, on the grounds that they are ineffectual, and second, on the grounds that not a single school-age child in Alberta has died from COVID-19. In addition, only two people under the age of 20 in all of Canada have died from Covid. This is far less than die every year in this age group from seasonal flu. Clearly our children are in no danger. Masks are disruptive in the classroom and a violation of our children's rights.

  • D

    Teachers don't need protection

The argument that masks are in place to protect the teachers is a hollow one. Most teachers are under the age of 60 and far more likely to die while driving to work than to die from Covid.

EndAlbertaLockdown promotes peaceful objection to the mandatory mask bylaw and restrictions on Calgary businesses. Under no circumstances do we condone violence or abuse towards those who believe differently than we do.

Covid Facts vs Fear

ICON FEAR

Covid is a highly virulent virus that Could Kill Anyone

Models predicted early in 2020 that Covid would kill up to 40 million people worldwide, and that no one was safe.

ICON FACT

Under 60, Covid is less lethal than the seasonal flu.

See the charts near the top of this page for data from the Gov. of Canada, showing that Covid is less lethal than the seasonal flu over the past 20 years, and that even in the over 60 population, Covid death numbers are not far out of line with seasonal flu.

In addition, there has not been a single instance of Covid killing an otherwise healthy person. The majority of those infected have no symptoms, and of those who do get sick, most will experience only mild symptoms and will not require hospitalization. To date, in Alberta, only 10 people have died who did not have at least one pre-existing comorbidity. While Alberta Health does not release their ages, it is highly likely that all 10 of these people were elderly.

The 2009 H1N1 epidemic was substantially more lethal.

ICON FEAR

Mandatory Masks Are Necessary to Prevent the Spread of Covid

On August 1st, both Calgary and Edmonton instituted mandatory mask bylaws to prevent the spread of Covid.

ICON FACT

If Masks Worked, We Would Have Seen a Drop in Cases

In Calgary, 25% of people were wearing masks prior to the bylaw. After August 1st this increased to 99%. If masks were effective for stopping the spread of a virus, we would have seen a substantial drop in cases in both Calgary and Edmonton post August 1. As you can see from this chart from the Centre for Health Informatics, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary no such drop occurred.

Click Photo to Enlarge

As you can see from this chart, none of the Covid measures instituted by the provincial or civic governments have led to a reduction in cases. If it had, the curves would have flattened out, but instead we see a normal summer progression for a seasonal virus.

A Danish randomized controlled trial on masks was published November 19 showing that masks have no statistical impact on infections.

ICON FEAR

Hospital ICU's will be Overwhelmed

When Covid lockdowns were instituted in early 2020 we were told it was a 'temporary measure' to prevent our hospitals from being overrun, and that if we did not take those measures thousands would die because treatment would not be available.

ICON FACT

Covid Cases Have Not Even Come Close to Overwhelming Capacity

As you can see from this chart, we are not even close to reaching ICU capacity in Alberta. Nor have we ever been. Currently Alberta's ICU capacity for Covid-19 patients is 2,400 beds, with 650 beds equipped with ventilators (click link for source).

But is there a crisis in our hospitals? There could be. Hospitals too are forced to follow AHS rules and send home anyone who becomes ill, as well as anyone who has been in close contact with them. Our hospitals are more than equipped to handle many times the number of Covid patients as we have seen, or could expect to see, however due to AHS guidelines, hospitals are now chronically short-staffed. Keep in mind that most of the health care workers who are being forced to isolate are not, in fact, sick. They have no symptoms and under any other circumstances would still be at work.

Max. number of Covid ICU Cases vs. Total Number of ICU Beds Available

“We really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method. Develop better systems for doing it. Work together and learn from each other, but remember lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never, ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer.”

Civil Disobedience

Following the law is part of what allows us to function as a society. However, when a government becomes tyrannical, when our own leaders become the greatest threat to our freedom, we are left with no choice but to refuse to comply. Governments have no power but what we give to them. The time for civil disobedience has come. We must stand united in defense of our freedoms, or risk losing them, not only for ourselves, but for our children.
